About the Role
The Tax Director will lead the firm’s tax department, overseeing compliance, advisory, and planning functions for a wide range of clients. This role requires an experienced public practice tax leader with strong technical depth, team management expertise, and the ability to partner with firm leadership on strategy, client engagement, and practice development.
The Director will manage a team of tax professionals and serve as the key advisor on complex tax planning and compliance matters, while helping shape the future of the firm’s tax practice.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance Oversight
- Oversee preparation and review of corporate, personal, and trust tax returns to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and CRA compliance.
- Manage elections, reorganizations, estate filings, and related-party transactions.
- Ensure year-end filings (T3s, T5s, etc.) are completed accurately and efficiently.
- Provide guidance on tax provisions, reserves, and compliance-related accounting issues. Client & Planning Support
- Provide strategic tax planning and advisory services in areas including remuneration, estate, succession, and trust planning.
- Assist clients with CRA audits, voluntary disclosures, and complex tax positions.
- Advise on legislative changes and maintain proactive client communication.
- Collaborate with other service lines (Assurance, Advisory, Forensics) for integrated client solutions.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead and mentor a team of seven tax professionals (Managers, Seniors, and Juniors).
- Oversee scheduling, workflow, and performance management across the compliance cycle.
- Deliver technical training and promote professional development initiatives.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of high-performing tax staff.
Practice Management & Growth
- Maintain up-to-date expertise in Canadian income tax law and emerging regulations.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement, automation, and enhanced client experience.
- Contribute to business development and cross-selling opportunities across the firm.
- Collaborate with Partners and Principals on practice growth and strategic direction.
Minimum Qualifications
- CPA designation in good standing (required)
- Completion of the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program (required)
- 10+ years of progressive tax experience in public practice
- Strong technical expertise in Canadian personal, corporate, and trust taxation
- Proven experience reviewing complex returns and planning files
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop tax teams
- Proficiency in CCH TaxPrep and CaseWare
Ideal Background
- Experience in Big 4, national, or mid-sized CPA firms

Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary of $150,000 – $180,000 + performance-based bonus
